Review by Encang Dimyaty

The album Concerto No 4 In D Minor Grand Duo For Violin Double And Orchestra Le Streghe by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Piero Bellugi, Ruggiero Ricci is a stunning masterpiece that showcases the virtuosity of the musicians involved. The orchestra, under the direction of Bellugi, provides a rich and dynamic backdrop to the intricate and melodic violin performances of Ricci.

The album opens with the titular piece "Le Streghe," a lively and upbeat composition that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Ricci's violin performances are nothing short of breathtaking, with his technical prowess shining through in every note. The orchestra provides a perfect accompaniment, with the different sections blending seamlessly together to create a cohesive and powerful sound.

The other pieces on the album are equally impressive, with each one showcasing different aspects of Ricci's talent as a violinist. "Adagio Cantabile" is a hauntingly beautiful piece that highlights Ricci's ability to convey emotion through his playing. "Allegro Vivace" is a fast-paced and energetic composition that demonstrates his technical skill and precision.

Mark Swed of the LA Times called this piece "schlock" when someone played it with the LA Phil; I guess this gives you some idea of what we have to contend with in the way of critics here in Los Angeles. I think he does not care for the Korngold either On the other hand, the public triumphs in the end. The Korngold is very widely played nowadays. Maybe the Menotti will come on too

I am age 70, and find it strange that this is the first time I have heard this wonderful concerto. Has Meotti slipped that much from favor?

I first heard this concerto about thirty years ago on an old LP of Tossy Spivakovsky. I loved the piece then and I still do. I suppose it's Menotti's great lyric gift as demonstrated in the middle movement plus the memorable theme in the finale introduced by the percussion. For me this concerto wears very well.

Ruggiero era unico! Persona umile e straordinaria... lo porto nel mio cuore... non dimenticherò mai quando si metteva a suonare con la mia bambina di quattro anni... con gioia e divertimento! E anche sua moglie Julia...
